CDC: Half of all American adults have a chronic disease

Diabetes - Public Domain

Half of all adults in the US have at least one chronic condition, such as diabetes, heart disease or obesity, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published in The Lancet.

The paper – part of a new series in the journal, ‘The health of Americans’ – says the proportion of adult Americans who have two or more of these conditions is more than a quarter.

The researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say the bulk of this morbidity could be prevented through the reduction of risk factors that fall within individuals’ control:

-Tobacco use
-Poor diet
-Physical inactivity
-Excessive alcohol consumption
-Poorly treated high blood pressure
-High cholesterol.

Both poor diet and physical inactivity are strongly associated with obesity.

  1. One important factor left out of the list of risks: exposure to a modern health care facility.

  2. Monsanto, the bioengineer of GMO food has added in my own opinion, to this serious problem. Every country but the USA and Canada have laws protecting against Monsanto. We cannot continue to eat the infused DNA used to make pesticides and weed killers without having an effect on our health.

  3. My grandparents never went to a doctor or took any medicine and they lived into their 90s.

    • The genetic code of humanity is actually breaking down slowly over time. The truth is that we aren’t as hearty as our grandparents were in general.

  4. High Fructose Corn Syrup used in many food products rather than natural sugar, this stuff is bad bad bad. Also artificial sweeteners like aspartame, splenda, equal etc are poison. Next time you are out watch the overweight person order a diet soda with the meal. Happens every time I am eating out. I drink water water then more water. Just trying to help my brothers and sisters as I have had a few weight loop da loops myself lol.
