The central and eastern United States are in the grip of a blistering heat wave, with widespread highs in the upper 90s expected through the start of the work week.
And people from New York to Atlanta to Houston can expect it to feel even hotter, as the heat index with humidity was expected to exceed 100 in much of the U.S.
While the east is feeling the heat, fire- and drought-ravaged California got a brief reprieve Saturday with a rare summer storm that helped to tamp down a blaze that jumped a freeway and dramatically burned several cars the day before.
