Fire and Brimstone really DOES lie beneath our feet: Researchers find Earth’s core contain’s 90% of planet’s sulphur

Tales of the underworld being ‘awash with fire and brimstone’ have existed for thousands of years.

Now, researchers say the old tale is actually true – for brimstone, at least.

The found vast stores of sulphur are found in our planet’s core.

The new research confirms that the Earth’s core does in fact contain huge amounts of sulphur, estimated to be up to 8.5 x 1018 tonnes.

This is about 10 times the amount of sulphur in the rest of the Earth, based on the most recent estimates (and for comparison, around 10% of the total mass of the Moon).
