(USA Today) Over 379,000 people have signed on to a Facebook event pledging to raid Area 51 in southern Nevada in an effort to “see them aliens.” An additional 396,000 respondents marked themselves as “interested” on the event page as of Thursday night.
“If we [N]aruto run, we can move faster than their bullets,” the event description says, making a humorous reference to a Japanese manga character known for running with his arms stretched out backward and his head forward.
The page invites respondents to convene Sept. 20 at the Area 51 Alien Center, a combination diner, convenience store and brothel in Amargosa Valley, Nevada, about 90 miles from Las Vegas. (Read More…)
What in the world is this thing? Just a few days ago, an extremely large mystery object washed ashore on Seabrook Island, and nobody can explain what it is or where it originated from. Officials from the city of Charleston quickly came out to investigate, and they immediately whisked the mysterious object away without offering any sort of explanation. From the photo that we do have, we can tell that it was obviously intelligently designed. The big question is whether it was designed here on Earth or by some extraterrestrial source. And it is obviously a very large object because in the photo it is taller than the adult woman that is standing right next to it.
At first glance, it is easy to assume that the exterior was made out of concrete, but according to multiple media accounts the exterior actually feels “like foam”…
The large cylindrical object, described as being soft and feeling like foam, was found by Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network who are usually deployed to deal with animals struggling on the shoreline.
After finding the large object on Thursday on Seabrook Island, they posted the image to Facebook, saying: ‘Look at this mysterious object that washed ashore on Seabrook Island today! What do you think it is?’
Could this be some “space junk” from a previous NASA program?
So far, NASA is not saying anything on the matter.
The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network asked for help identifying the object and the Kiawah Conservancy shared the plea on its Facebook page. Dozens of people have responded with guesses ranging from parts of an alien craft to refuse from a “government munition dumping site” in the Atlantic.
“I saw it this morning on my walk,” posted Jennifer Passantino on the Kiawah Conservancy Facebook page. “I assume it was a buoy, but could also be the remains of an alien spaceship.”
The most popular assumption is that the object is part of a NASA rocket, shuttle or “re-entry capsule.”
Do you think that you can identify the origin of this object?

For quite a while, it seemed like there just were not too many UFO sightings, but in recent weeks the number of sightings in the United States appears to have risen dramatically. Is there a reason why this is suddenly happening? From coast to coast, reports are pouring in, and quite a few of them seem to be highly credible. For example, when a camper in Wisconsin recently took a photo of his group huddled around a campfire at night, his iPhone captured “a strange vessel with glowing green lights” hovering above them…
The anonymous believer was on a trip to Maiden Rock, in the US state of Wisconsin, last week when they decided to take a snap of the group sat around the large camp fire.
But when they looked back over the iPhone pics they noticed a strange vessel with glowing green lights hovering above the group.
Nobody in the group noticed the UFO at the time. Only after going back and looking at the photo did the photographer realize that something was there…
They added: “I was with eight other people. None of us saw it with our naked eye, but I’ve showed the photo to several of the other people that were there and we all agree it’s weird.
“I thought it looked like something from a sci-fi movie. It freaked me out.”
Interestingly, an “eerie ring of UFO lights” was captured on film by several witnesses in nearby Minnesota earlier in the month…
Could it be possible that there is some connection between these two sightings?
“Within about 5-10 seconds I noticed some movement flying in front of the gold-coloured building on the right hand side of my TV screen.
“It was moving very fast, I thought maybe it was a fighter jet. I rewound the scene a few times and viewed it in slow motion, forward and reverse.
“It appeared to come from the upper portion of the screen, where there appears to be a parking lot.”
You can see a photograph of that “UFO” right here.
Another very unusual UFO sighting that took place in California not too long ago was documented by multiple witnesses…
An extremely strange UFO sighting off of the California coastline has created quite an uproar over the past several days. This UFO (or fleet of UFOs as some are calling it) was filmed by numerous people in both the United States and across the border in Mexico. So we have multiple confirmations that the UFO sighting is real, and so far nobody has been able to explain it away. In the end, it could be some type of really bizarre secret military project, but why won’t the military admit that if that is the case? One video on YouTube captured footage of this unidentified anomaly for six minutes, but unfortunately it was so far away that we weren’t able to get a really good look at it.
And out on the east coast, a “giant square UFO” scared a man in North Carolina so badly that he literally could not sleep the night after he photographed it…
A 35-year-old man named Javion Hill created quite a stir when he posted a photograph of a giant square UFO that he witnessed hovering near Charlotte, North Carolina on his Facebook profile. Hill claims that he took his photograph on the night of August 18th, and another witness has chimed in and said that he spotted a UFO in that area that night as well. If this photograph is legitimate, the UFO is absolutely enormous, so it is quite understandable why Hill was so shaken up by this incident. Before taking this photo, Hill said that he didn’t “necessarily believe in UFOs”, but he sure does now.
Last but certainly not least, a man living in the El Paso, Texas area recently filmed an enormous triangular-shaped craft flying in the skies above him…
Video footage has emerged of the moment one man may have captured something he shouldn’t while on the way to work.
The anonymous source was driving when he noticed something unusual in the skies above El Paso, Texas.
He pulled out his phone to record, and when he checked it out later he was left stunned by the footage.
It shows what appears to be a triangular-shaped aircraft hovering above him.
So we have recent credible UFO sightings from the east coast, the west coast, the north and the south.
Many of the people who took these photographs didn’t even believe in UFOs before these encounters.
Is there a reason why UFO activity appears to be spiking right now?
Could it be possible that something big is about to happen?
At this moment we don’t have all the answers, but we will definitely keep watching…

(Live Science) “Fast radio bursts are exceedingly bright given their short duration and origin at great distances, and we haven’t identified a possible natural source with any confidence,” Avi Loeb, a scientist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who was not involved in the discovery, said last year in a statement related to new research on these bursts.
He added that an “artificial origin” of the signals (i.e., extraterrestrial intelligence) is worth considering. Other possible origins include supernovas (exploding stars), supermassive black holes or various other sources of mighty electromagnetic radiation, such as pulsars.
(Fox News) The severely elongated head of a preserved skeleton found in Peru’s Atacama Desert in 2003 is so unusual that it initially prompted people to suggest that the diminutive body was that of an extraterrestrial.
Since then, DNA testing confirmed that the remains — which measure about 6 inches (15 centimeters) long — belonged to a human fetus that researchers named Ata. But the scientists who conducted that investigation and published their findings in March have recently come under fire for their methods.
NASA told us in advance that there would be a huge announcement on Wednesday, and it certainly was not a disappointment. NASA’s declaration that 7 new Earth-sized planets had been discovered approximately 40 light years away from our sun made headlines all over the globe, and the Internet immediately started buzzing with lots of discussions about the possibility that these newly discovered worlds may have life on them. This isn’t the kind of thing that I normally write about on The Economic Collapse Blog, but some of the things that were being said by the scientists involved in this discovery seemed quite odd. It is one thing to say that some new planets have been found, but it is another thing entirely to start speculating about life on those planets. With each new discovery that is made, why does it always seem like NASA is trying to promote the idea that alien life may exist somewhere out there? Could it be possible that they are trying to mentally prepare us for something?
The discovery sets a new record for greatest number of habitable-zone planets found around a single star outside our solar system. All of these seven planets could have liquid water – key to life as we know it – under the right atmospheric conditions, but the chances are highest with the three in the habitable zone.
“This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the agency’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “Answering the question ‘are we alone’ is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal.”
If this discovery is confirmed, it is definitely quite remarkable.
But why engage in speculation about whether or not we are alone in the universe?
You can view a YouTube video from NASA about this new discovery right here. As you can see from the video, the scientists involved in this project are extremely excited…
Of course we must acknowledge that nobody has actually seen any of these planets. Based on data that astronomers have been able to observe, they assume that those seven planets must be there. The following comes from Smithsonian Magazine…
To detect these other worlds, Gillon and his team used the so-called “transit” method, one of several techniques for hunting planets. Other techniques include measuring the wobble of a star caused by a planet’s gravitational pull, observing how light from a distant star bends around a planet or capturing a direct image of the planet.
The power of the transit method comes from its simplicity: Astronomers measure the level of light from a star, and look for any dips in brightness that could be the result of a planet passing between the star and Earth. By seeing how much and how often the level of light is reduced during each “transit” of the planet in front of the star, astronomers can then estimate its size and orbit.
So it is entirely possible that scientists may be misinterpreting the data.
Someday we may find out that there are more planets in the system, or we may discover that there aren’t any planets there at all.
“Looking for life elsewhere, this system is probably our best bet as of today,” study co-author Brice-Olivier Demory, a professor at the Center for Space and Habitability at the University of Bern in Switzerland, said in a statement.
No other star system has ever been found to contain so many Earth-sized and rocky planets, of the kind thought to be necessary to contain aliens.
The researchers might soon be able to find evidence of life on the planets, they have said. British astronomer Dr Chris Copperwheat, from Liverpool John Moores University, who was part of the international team, said: “The discovery of multiple rocky planets with surface temperatures which allow for liquid water make this amazing system an exciting future target in the search for life.”
And of course NASA is not just looking at these planets in their obsessive search for alien life.
NASA believes there’s a gigantic ocean locked beneath its frozen surface and is planning to send a robotic craft to see if aliens are swimming in it.
This week, the space agency has revealed its three goals for the upcoming search for life.
It wrote: “The primary goal is to search for evidence of life on Europa.
“The other goals are to assess the habitability of Europa by directly analyzing material from the surface, and to characterize the surface and subsurface to support future robotic exploration of Europa and its ocean.”
So why is NASA so sure that alien life must be out there somewhere?
Do they know things that they aren’t disclosing to the rest of us?
As a society, we are constantly being conditioned to the idea that “alien life” must exist. This is one of the major themes in our movies, our television shows and our video games.
And now the scientific community has fully embraced this idea.
Could it be possible that the stage is being set for “the great deception” that authors such as L.A. Marzulli are constantly warning us about?
If someday a big announcement is made that “we are not alone” in the universe, humanity will already have been heavily conditioned to accept it as the truth.
Unfortunately, we live at a time when deception is running rampant, and that is why it is absolutely critical to not let someone else do your thinking for you.
A group of self-proclaimed paranormal researchers claim they have found a giant claw with belonging to an alien in caves in Peru.
They believe the ‘giant three-fingered hand’, which has fingers at least eight inches long and was allegedly found in tunnels near the ancient city of Cusco, belonged to an alien or ancient human-like creature.
The group have so far refused to reveal exactly where the bones were found.
Residents across Turkey have posted photos and videos on social media of an alleged UFO, resulting in #ufoattacktoturkey to begin trending on Twitter.
As people scrambled to understand what they were seeing late on Sunday, many social media users were convinced an alien invasion was imminent.
Some even had enough spare time to make a video compilation of the sighting. Popular UFO hunters ‘Secure Stream’ posted footage on YouTube and, according to the group, there was mass panic in Turkey. There was even talk of Twitter and Facebook censoring posts on the topic.
Many people, however, saw the funny side of things. Turkish MP Aykut Erdoğdu even referenced the sighting in a tweet, saying: “we might all be losing it.”
I wasn’t going to write about this. I was trained as an attorney and I am skeptical by nature, and so I generally don’t like to write about things that I can’t prove. But in the case of this bizarre winged creature, a couple of factors changed my mind. First of all, we actually have physical evidence which has been scientifically tested. When it comes to things like this, people are always crying out for some real physical evidence, and now we have some. Of course the existence of evidence does not mean that we can necessarily find answers to all of our questions, but at least we have something to work with. Secondly, a highly respected researcher named L.A. Marzulli has spent a great deal of time extensively investigating this case. I have personally interacted with L.A. Marzulli, and I have followed his work for years, and so I know how credible he is.
Earlier today, I visited L.A. Marzulli’s blog, and I was astounded by what I saw. There in living color was a bizarre winged creature that doesn’t bear any resemblance to any animal that science currently knows about. You can view it for yourself on his blog right here.
L.A. Marzulli did not personally discover this creature. Rather, it was originally discovered on the side of a highway by a 13-year-old Mexican boy who didn’t know what it was. He ultimately turned it over to a well known Mexican investigative journalist named Jaime Maussan. Since that time this creature has been x-rayed, and the x-rays enabled researchers to see that the creature possessed a full skeletal structure. The x-rays even showed that the creature’s left leg had been broken at one point. In addition, DNA testing was done, and the DNA did not match any known animal.
This amazing discovery is featured in L.A.’s new documentary entitled “Watchers 10“, and a 9 minute clip featuring analysis of this creature has been posted to YouTube right here…
So the big question that we need to ask is this…
What in the world is that thing?
At this point, there appear to be three main theories.
Many people are calling this winged creature a fairy. I have always been skeptical of the existence of “fairies” even though YouTube is loaded with footage that people have supposedly captured of “fairies” flying around at high speed. Videos are very easily doctored, and I have always been waiting for hard evidence. This winged creature is certainly small, and it certainly does have wings, but it doesn’t really fit the description of what you might expect a “fairy” to look like. Instead, it looks quite gruesome and evil. It has pointy ears like a gargoyle, and the body of the creature looks to me like it resembles an insect more than a person.
Maybe this is what all “fairies” actually look like, but I am still skeptical.
Secondly, some people are calling this winged creature an “alien”. But of course that label is almost instantly applied to any strange creature that pops up these days.
The most common form of “alien” that people encounter are known as “the greys“, but there is only a slight resemblance between this creature and “the greys”. From what people have reported, “greys” don’t have long pointy ears, they don’t have wings, and they don’t have tails.
Of course it is always possible that this creature could be another type of “alien”. But I don’t know how we would go about proving that.
Thirdly, L.A. Marzulli and others have pointed out that this winged creature that was discovered in Mexico does seem to have some similarities to the “locusts” that are described in Revelation chapter 9. The following is what Revelation 9:7-11 says in the Modern English Version…
7 The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were something like crowns of gold, and their faces were like faces of men. 8 They had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions. 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses running to battle. 10 They had tails like scorpions and stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men for five months. 11 They had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek his name is Apollyon.
Does this creature have a face like a man?
I think that you could say that.
I don’t see any hair, but it is always possible that it could have had hair at one time. I do see some frightening looking teeth, and it definitely has very prominent wings.
The detail that is most intriguing though is the stinger at the end of the tail. On Marzulli’s website, you can see a closeup of the tail and the stinger. Obviously the stinger has a function, and at this point we can only speculate because we don’t know enough about the creature.
Ultimately, there is always the possibility that this could be some sort of an elaborate hoax, but the scientific examinations that have been done so far have cast doubt on that explanation. But I am certainly not willing to totally rule that out at this point either.
In the end, I don’t know what that creature is.
I was highly intrigued when I saw it, and after thinking about it I decided to share this bit of news with all of you.
I would encourage you to look into this for yourself and come to your own conclusions.
If we are indeed living in the last days as described in the Bible, then our world is going to get very, very weird in the years ahead. The Book of Revelation describes all sorts of bizarre creatures and strange events, and the more I read it the more I am convinced that the period just before Jesus comes back is going to look a whole lot more like an extremely wild science fiction movie than most people would dare to imagine.
So yes, a strange winged creature that looks like something from another world may be hard to swallow, but this might just be the tip of the iceberg.
By the time it is all said and done, we could very well see things in the years ahead that will completely blow all of our minds.

For the last 15 years, scientists have been detecting strange radio bursts from deep space that appear mathematical in nature, reports New Scientist. The fact that they display a mathematical pattern is the linchpin: There are no known natural phenomenon capable of generating radio bursts with this kind of pattern.
So either these radio waves represent some yet undiscovered celestial event, or they are being produced by some kind of technology. In other words, if they do have a technological origin and they aren’t being generated by us, that means they could be signals from an extraterrestrial intelligence. Yep, that’s right: aliens.
There are those who believe that life was first brought to Earth from far across the universe. In fact, this week there were headlines in news sources all over the world about how British scientists had discovered “evidence” that extraterrestrials may have seeded life on this planet. And as you will see later on in this article, some of the “most brilliant minds in science” have been promoting this theory for a long time. But now the support for an extraterrestrial origin for life on Earth seems to be reaching a crescendo. In addition to unprecedented scientific support, we are being constantly bombarded by messages in popular culture that our planet has been in contact with aliens in the past and that they are about to make contact again. This is a theme which we see in dozens of novels, television shows, movies and video games. So could it be possible that we are being “prepared” to believe that extraterrestrials seeded life on our planet? And as you will see below, there are even many that actually believe that Jesus was an alien. Yes, that probably sounds very strange, but there are some very important people that are actually convinced that this is true.
But first let’s talk about the origin of life on Earth. The theory that life originated elsewhere in the universe and was eventually brought here by extraterrestrials has been around for decades. It is known as “directed panspermia” and this is what Wikipedia has to say about it…
Directed panspermia concerns the deliberate transport of microorganisms in space, sent to Earth to start life here, or sent from Earth to seed new solar systems with life by introduced species of microorganisms on lifeless planets. The Nobel prize winner Francis Crick, along with Leslie Orgel proposed that life may have been purposely spread by an advanced extraterrestrial civilization, but considering an early “RNA world” Crick noted later that life may have originated on Earth. It has been suggested that ‘directed’ panspermia was proposed in order to counteract various objections, including the argument that microbes would be inactivated by the space environment and cosmic radiation before they could make a chance encounter with Earth.
But even though this theory has been around for a very long time, it is only in recent years when it has seen a surge in popularity.
UK scientists have just found some evidence supporting a theory so out of this world it makes others look unimaginative by comparison. A strange, tiny object may suggest that Earth was actually seeded by extra-terrestrials to create life.
It sounds nuts, but first let’s at least look at the findings. Astrobiologist Milton Wainwright and a team of researchers at the University of Buckingham recently discovered a microscopic metal sphere in the dust from the team’s atmospheric balloon. Specifically, the hair-length ball is made of titanium and vanadium with a viscous liquid, and most intriguingly, a biological core.
What on Earth would a ball filled with alien goo be doing, well, on Earth? According to the theory of “directed panspermia,” coined by Nobel Prize winner Francis Crick, such objects may have been used by life forms from outside our Solar System to bring creation to our planet. “One theory is it was sent to Earth by some unknown civilization in order to continue seeding the planet with life,” said Wainwright in an interview while referencing Crick’s work.
And it is important to note how eagerly those scientists and mainstream publications are interpreting the biological material that was found as “alien goo”.
In this world, most people end up believing exactly what they want to believe, and there are many in the scientific world that now want to believe that aliens brought life to this planet.
At this point, even some of the biggest stars in the entire scientific world are admitting that they are open to this theory.
For example, consider what evolutionist Richard Dawkins told Ben Stein during an interview for the movie “Expelled“…
BEN STEIN: What do you think is the possibility that Intelligent Design might turn out to be the answer to some issues in genetics or in evolution?
RICHARD DAWKINS: Well, it could come about in the following way. It could be that at some earlier time, somewhere in the universe, a civilization evolved, probably by some kind of Darwinian means, probably to a very high level of technology, and designed a form of life that they seeded onto perhaps this planet. Now that is a possibility, and an intriguing possibility. And I suppose it’s possible that you might find evidence for that if you look at the details of biochemistry, molecular biology, you might find a signature of some sort of designer.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, there are even some that believe that Jesus Christ was an extraterrestrial. In fact, this was a topic on a BBC broadcast recently…
A program aired on the British Broadcasting Corporation recently held a discussion as to whether or not major religious figures like Jesus Christ and the Buddha were from other planets.
In a religion-focused series titled “The Big Questions”, host Nicky Campbell oversaw a discussion asking the query, “Have beings from other planets guided our religions?”
“Last month NASA’s Kepler space telescope identified another planet that might have the right conditions for life,” said Campbell.
“It will be no surprise to the followers of those religions who’ve long believed that life – possibly not as we know it – exists elsewhere in the galaxy. Life which has possibly exerted its influence here on planet Earth. Have beings from other planets guided our religions?”
But it isn’t just some fringe crazies that believe this stuff.
Investigative reporter Tom Horn has discovered that some top Vatican scholars are also into this kind of thing…
Do Vatican scholars actually believe Jesus might have been the Star-Child of an alien race? Does Consolmagno and/or other Jesuits secretly hold that the “Virgin Birth” was in reality an abduction scenario in which Mary was impregnated by ET, giving birth to the hybrid Jesus? As incredible as that sounds, you should prepare for the unexpected answer as this series unfolds.
All this would seem impossible theology if not for the fact that other high ranking Vatican spokespersons—those who routinely study from the “Star Base” (as local Indians call it) on Mt. Graham—have been saying the same in recent years. This includes Dr. Christopher Corbally, Vice Director for the Vatican Observatory Research Group on Mt. Graham until 2012, who believes our image of God will have to change if disclosure of alien life is soon revealed by scientists (including the need to evolve from the concept of an “anthropocentric” God into a “broader entity”), [iv] and the current Vatican Observatory director, Father Josè Funes who has gone equally far, suggesting that alien life not only exists in the universe and is “our brother” but will, when manifested, confirm the “true” faith of Christianity and the dominion of Rome.
With each passing year, more people than ever are looking to the stars for the answers to the most important questions that we face.
Thanks to a relentless bombardment from books, video games, movies and television shows, there are now hundreds of millions of people all around the globe that are anticipating that alien lifeforms could make contact with us at any moment.
So are we being prepared to believe that extraterrestrials seeded life on this planet?
Are we being prepared to accept them as our friends or even potentially as our saviors?
Please feel free to share what you think by posting a comment below…
This big secret will be revealed in 2015, if the chatter on shows like Coast-to-Coast AM is any indication. Why? Well, the “Grays” — the name given to the aliens who either conspire with the government to keep their presence hidden or are on the verge of attacking the Earth — have somehow given an ultimatum to their human co-conspirators. Maybe it’s time to move humanity into the next phase of their existence. Maybe humans are battering the planet so badly that the Grays, who need the milk of the Earth to survive, are in peril. If humans fail to disclose the Grays’ existence, then the Grays will make themselves known by, perhaps, a global television event that shows off their gravity-defying hardware.
One-third to half of Americans give real credence to the possibility that aliens exist and are living among us. That’s 80 million to 100 million adults. They don’t just think that alien DNA might have helped spark life on Earth, or that life exists elsewhere in the universe. They believe in the conspiracy. We treat them as ninnies with tin-foil hats and bumper stickers. But they are all of us!
A dying scientist has made a bizarre deathbed video claiming he knows what is really going on at Nevada’s mysterious Area 51 – and says that he reverse-engineered flying saucer technology for defence firm Lockheed Martin.
Boyd Bushman made the revelations in a video recorded just before he died this August – along with photographs of aliens he claims were taken on disposable cameras within American military facilities.
Bushman was a research scientist at Lockheed Martin, with a number of patents to his name – although details of his biography are disputed.
Bushman said in the video, recorded on August 7 this year: ‘With respect to the alien craft, we have American citizens who are working on UFOs 24 hours a day. We are trying to learn what to do.’
At Scientific American, Clara Moskowitz has the transcript from a recent interview with Weintraub, in which they discuss the implications of extraterrestrial life on humanity’s assorted religious sensibilities. Here’s Weintraub on the difficulties that could be faced by religions that see humans as “the sole focus of God’s attention”:
The religions that see the world through that viewpoint tend to be some of the Christian evangelicals. The Eastern Orthodox Church, a branch of Catholicism, also has that view.
There are some people who claim that if God had created extraterrestrials, then there clearly would be words in the Old and New testaments, which we would have already found, that would have said explicitly that God created extraterrestrials—and since those words don’t exist, there can’t be. Well, there’s nothing in the Old and New testaments that talks about telephones either, and telephones do seem to exist.
As for which religions would accept the existence of alien life most readily, Weintraub points to the expansive cosmological scope of Buddhism as an indication that practitioners of that belief system “wouldn’t be surprised to find life existing in other places.” Mormonism, too, he says, is “pretty interesting”:
There is a clear belief in Mormonism in extraterrestrial life. All Mormons have as a goal to become exalted, to become a god. To become a god you effectively get your own planet with your own creatures on it and you’ll take good care of them. The only place in the universe where you have the opportunity to become exalted is Earth. Those Mormons that receive the highest level of exaltation will be equals with God and have their own worlds, occupied with living beings seeking their own salvation and immortality. The prophet Joseph Smith taught that these worlds are or will be inhabited by sentient beings. It is everywhere taken for granted. They’re not vague at all. There’s no doubt that the Mormons are comfortable about the idea that there are others on other worlds. They’d be unhappy if we didn’t find anybody. But they’d just say we haven’t looked hard enough.
The interview is definitely worth reading in its entirety (for the section on whether Jesus saved the Klingons as well as humanity, alone), so check it out over at SciAm.
In 1930, Albert Einstein was asked for his opinion about the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe. “Other beings, perhaps, but not men,” he answered. Then he was asked whether science and religion conflict. “Not really, though it depends, of course, on your religious views.”
Over the past 10 years, astronomers’ new ability to detect planets orbiting other stars has taken this question out of the realm of philosophy, as it was for Einstein, and transformed it into something that scientists might soon be able to answer.
Realization that the nature of the debate about life on other worlds is about to fundamentally change led Vanderbilt Professor of Astronomy David Weintraub to begin thinking seriously about the question of how people will react to the discovery of life on other planets. He realized, as Einstein had observed, that people’s reactions will be heavily influenced by their religious beliefs. So he decided to find out what the world’s major religions have to say about the matter. The result is a book titled “Religions and Extraterrestrial Life” (Springer International Publishing) published this month.
“When I did a library search, I found only half a dozen books and they were all written about the question of extraterrestrial life and Christianity, and mostly about Roman Catholicism, so I decided to take a broader look,” the astronomer said. As a result, his book describes what religious leaders and theologians have to say about extraterrestrial life in more than two dozen major religions, including Judaism, Roman Catholicism, the Eastern Orthodox churches, the Church of England and the Anglican Communion, several mainline Protestant sects, the Southern Baptist Convention and other evangelical and fundamentalist Christian denominations, the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Seventh Day Adventism and Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons), Islam and several major Asian religions including Hinduism, Buddhism and the Baha’i Faith.
Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno, the new president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation, has no doubt that life exists elsewhere in the universe and that when humanity discovers it, the news will come as no big surprise.
He suggested that the likely discovery — whether next month or a millennium from now — will be received much the way that news of planets orbiting far off stars has filtered in since the 1990s.
“The general public is going to be, ‘Oh, I knew that. I knew it was going to be there,'” Brother Consolmagno told Catholic News Service prior to a presentation at a NASA/Library of Congress symposium on preparing for the discovery of life in the universe Sept. 18-19.
A planetary scientist who has studied meteorites and asteroids as an astronomer with the Vatican Observatory since 1993, Brother Consolmagno said he hopes the questions about life on other planets will focus more on how humanity sees itself.
“When we say human, human as compared to what?” he asked.
While the discovery of life elsewhere will not prove nor disprove the existence of God, Brother Consolmagno expects that it will open the door to ponder what form salvation history may take in other intelligent societies.
NASA predicts that 100 million worlds in our own Milky Way galaxy may host alien life, and space program scientists estimate that humans will be able to find life within two decades.
Speaking at NASA’s Washington headquarters on Monday, the space agency outlined a plan to search for alien life using current telescope technology, and announced the launch of the Transiting Exoplanet Surveying Satellite in 2017. The NASA administrators and scientists estimate that humans will be able to locate alien life within the next 20 years.
“Just imagine the moment, when we find potential signatures of life. Imagine the moment when the world wakes up and the human race realizes that its long loneliness in time and space may be over — the possibility we’re no longer alone in the universe,” said Matt Mountain, director and Webb telescope scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, which plans to launch the James Webb Space Telescope in 2018.
